Respond to the child's interests and concerns, and involve them in nature games, quizzes and treasure hunts. Find out whether your child's school is involved with any environmental projects, and see if you can help. The nature organisation Watch has local groups throughout the country, involved in a wide range of activities.

Another active youth organisation is the Young People's Trust for the Environment and Nature 'Conservation, which arranges environmental discovery courses for 9- to 13-year-olds. Wayne Cornell's Sharing Nature With Children (Exley, 2009) is a treasure trove of ideas for nature games and exercises. SHARING NATURE WITH CHILDREN -- WHO BENEFITS? You: Taking an interested child can make your country walks even more enjoyable, and may well get you out into the fresh air more often.

Other people: Children are quite naturally fascinated by and concerned about the natural world. As one six-year-old girl said, watching a film about the rainforests, 'I don't want the trees to be felled because I get a feeling here in my heart.' The environment: What happens to the environment ultimately depends upon our children. Teaching them about nature and helping them to appreciate its complexities and mysteries will help to safeguard the natural environment for many years to come.

LEARNING - A LIFELONG PROCESS - THE FACTS: Education in The UK today is undergoing major change. Many, with a variety of political convictions, would use the word 'crisis'. At present the aim seems to be to produce workers for a technologically sophisticated, internationally competitive, highly skilled economy.

Yet this approach to education as a form of job-training is, for a growing number of pupils, simply not working. Both unemployment and truancy are at record levels, while classroom unrest reflects the boredom felt by many young people. Only 57 per cent of school-leavers will find a proper job, while 21 per cent of 15- and 16-year-olds are missing from school on any given day, a third of them for no obvious reason.

Green-thinkers suggest that we must widen the concept of learning, concentrating on quality rather than quantity, since the problems arising within schools are simply a reflection of problems within society. Learning is a lifelong process, they say, and should provide each of us with the tools and skills we need to fulfil our individual potential. Many teachers agree that the concept of learning should be widened and, despite lack of funding, several exciting new educational projects have been developed. Resource centres have been set up all over the country, and teachers have a wider range of materials to draw on than ever before.

At the same time, and also despite financial constraints, educational opportunities, have widened for adults too. Whatever happens to our education system, the attention it is currently receiving can only be a good thing. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: Education needs to take account of individual needs, covering a wide range of intellectual, creative and manual skills. It should use the skills and experience of the community.

In this way the boundaries between school and non-school can be transcended, offering school facilities to anyone who can use them, and using the non-school world as an additional classroom for children. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Take an interest in your children's education and talk to them about important issues, both local and global. Point them in the direction of interesting websites, Internet programmes and local events.
