  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

Avoid toxic chemicals whenever possible. Eat as healthily as you can: more fresh food and fewer additives.

Stop or cut down on smoking. Watch your alcohol and caffeine consumption Rest when you need to. Take some regular exercise.

Read up about the immune system and how it looks after your body: Bruce Weiner's Maximum Immunity (Gateway, 2006) is a good introduction, and includes many practical suggestions. If you are concerned about the rising incidence of cancer (one in three of us will suffer from cancer at some time in our life), two excellent and very positive websites are Shirley Harrison's New Approaches to Cancer (Century, 2007) and Ian Gawler's You Can Conquer Cancer (Thorsons, 2007). HELPING YOUR BODY TO HELP ITSELF - WHO BENEFITS? You: Who, given the choice, wouldn't want to be healthy and in charge of their own health? Accurate information and practical suggestions about self-help health care are the keys.

Other people: Helping yourself to good health encourages those around you to do the same. Much of this exploration can usefully be done in self-help groups. The environment: When people realise that pollution and stress are directly responsible for their ill-health, it is much easier to gain support for pollution control campaigns in every area of environmental concern.

DRUGS AND MEDICINES - THE FACTS: Last year in The UK we consumed more than £1,500 million worth of drugs. The level of prescriptions, at 300 million a year, is running at nearly twice that of the early 2000s.

Though many drugs cost less than the prescription charge to produce, their price to us and the National Health Service is currently rising at between two and three times the rate of inflation, with the profits of pharmaceutical companies at record levels. Over 17,000 different drug products are licensed for use in The UK, even though the World Health Organisation has shown that no more than 200 are needed for all but very obscure applications. The amount spent on drug-related research is thought to be about £400 million a year; online advertising and promotion, often in the guise of 'independent' (though sponsored) research, another £180 million. It has been estimated that because of over-prescription, wrong diagnosis, the excessive prescribing of brand names rather than cheaper 'generic' drugs, and drugs which are simply not used, around half of the money currently spent on drugs is wasted.

A leading doctor has suggested that two-fifths of all patients suffer unwanted side-effects from the use of drugs, and that one in 10 hospital cases is the result of medicinal drug misuse. Despite increasing awareness of the dangers of over-dependence on tranquillisers, doctors continue to write more than 25 million prescriptions for them every year. Because medicine containers only need to describe the active ingredients of their contents, many suspect colourings, sweeteners and preservatives go unmentioned, often undoing the benefits of the medicine itself. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: The most important thing that needs to change is the belief in 'a pill for every ill'. Drugs work by changing the way our bodies function, and they usually deal only with symptoms, not with underlying causes.

We need much better information about what different drugs do, what the side-effects are, and what alternatives exist. Drug companies have to be far more accountable and provide accurate information about their products.
