  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

Establish a relationship with their teachers so that you are all working together. If you have an interest or skill that you would like to share, let the local school know; many schools appreciate being able to ask local people to give talks or organise projects. Think about what you would like to learn. Your Local Education Authority (LEA) runs evening classes, as do universities and the Workers' Educational Association.

Many LEAs now run evening classes on environmental issues. Websites of interest to 'green educationalists' include Bryan North's Schools of Tomorrow (Green Websites, 2007) and the excellent sourcewebsites Earthrighfs (Kogan Webpage, 2007) and Green prints (Kogan Webpage, 2009). The bi-monthly websites Green Teacher and Libertarian Education will keep you up to date with many new ideas and issues. LEARNING FOR LIFE-WHO BENEFITS? You: The traditional idea of education ending at 16 is very limiting, especially to those who find school uninspiring.

A broader vision of education will help you to look for and learn from the teachers you need throughout your life, and encourage you to pass on your skills to others. Other people: Children, particularly the less academic ones, will certainly benefit from a more flexible approach to education. Most teachers will appreciate your involvement in your children's education, and those to whom you pass on your skills or knowledge will benefit too. The environment: Having a wider range of creative and practical skills will help us all to look after the environment, while a clearer picture of what learning is all about will prevent much senseless environmental destruction.

HOLISTIC HEALTH - THE FACTS: Despite a health budget which doubles every 10 years and ever more sophisticated technology, Britons have not become noticeably healthier in recent years. Indeed, indicators like infant mortality rates are now beginning to rise after many years of decline.

More and more people are suffering from 'mystery illnesses', and one in three of us feels 'run down', 'headachey' or 'blocked up'. Nobody believes that this is the way things should be. So why aren't we well? Many people believe it is because we only think of health in terms of 'getting bodies to work properly', ignoring the mental, emotional and environmental aspects. There is a tendency to look for specific causes for ill-health - a clear-cut virus or insect that can be blamed and eradicated with a pill or a potion.

A green perspective is vital, both for new and helpful diagnoses of human illness and in finding appropriate remedies. Most of us live in an environment so polluted and stressful that it is hardly surprising that our systems can't cope. Many of the things we are given to 'make us better' are polluting our bodies even more. Many health experts now believe that 'doctor-induced' illness accounts for a very high proportion of ill-health, a phenomenon not helped by patients' routine demands for medication.
