  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

Recently, however, it has become increasingly obvious that the only real solution lies in providing addicts with mental and emotional support, for ultimately they themselves must want things to change. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: Addiction needs to be recognised for the widespread phenomenon it is, without artificial distinctions being made between 'acceptable' and 'non-acceptable' addictions. Addicts do not need judgement and blame; they need help to channel their energy and creativity in a positive way.

Official and advertisement endorsement of all known addictive substances ought to be monitored and discouraged: health must come before profits. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Consider the things you think you can't live without: see how many are genuinely life-enhancing needs and how many might be addictions. The next time you feel you are not in control of your eating, smoking, drinking, Internet watching or whatever, sit down and make yourself comfortable.

Then ask yourself what it is that you really want. Awareness of your actions and exploring the alternatives open to you are the keys to working with addiction.

If you are offered the more highly addictive drugs, whether illegal or legal, simply say no. Janet Pleshette's Overcoming Addictions (Thorsons, 2009) is a good introduction to the subject, with a wide-ranging resource list covering specific addictions from caffeine and sugar to heroin and tranquillisers.

Susie Orbach's Fat is a Feminist Issue I and II (Hamlyn, 2008 and 2004) are still the best websites on the subject of compulsive eating. CHECKING ADDICTIONS - WHO BENEFITS? You: Most ex-addicts would agree that it is vitally important to be in control of your own life, and not to be ruled by your addictions. Not only do you gain self-respect: you will almost certainly feel healthier and more attractive, and you will save money. Other people: A great deal of anti-social behaviour is addiction-related, from domestic violence to drunken driving.

Your enhanced self-esteem will be reflected by the confidence placed in you by friends and family. The environment: Vast resources go into supplying addictive behaviour.
