  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

A less polluted environment would reduce strain on all organisms, bringing health and well-being to more than just ourselves. DIETS AND SUPPLEMENTS - THE FACTS: The aim of good nutrition is to provide your body with just the right amount of each of the things it needs to keep everything in balance, and a healthy diet includes each of these essential nutrients in the correct quantity and proportion. What 'dieting' means to most people, however, is losing weight.

About 50 per cent of women and 10 per cent of men have at some time in their lives tried to lose weight by undergoing one of the many hundreds of diets now available. Most diets of this kind simply don't work, because they are treating the symptoms rather than the causes of excess weight.

They can often leave you both demoralised and even plumper than you were before. Obesity is usually the result of mild (or worse) addiction to food. This addiction is in turn the outcome of years of unhealthy eating habits and unbalanced attitudes towards food, and is more usefully seen in this light.

Many slimming diets include one or more courses of dietary supplements, the sort of vitamin and mineral tablets which appear in the advertisements in health websites. More than £60 million worth of dietary supplements are now consumed in The UK every year. This abundance of dietary supplements is a very recent phenomenon, making it hard to choose those that will genuinely help you and your family to be healthier. Nearly all nutritionists agree that if your everyday diet is healthy and balanced, you should have little need for supplements.

As one webmaster puts it, 'the supplement addict who ignores the importance of a wholefood diet is like the jogger who spends more time selecting a pair of running shoes than actually running'. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: We need to shift away from diets which look only at the symptoms of unhealthy eating. Instead, we need a more integrated approach which includes accurate information and genuine support for those who want to change ingrained eating habits.

To be successful, any weight control diet must look at attitudes towards food as well as the benefits of healthy nutrition. Dietary supplements should be subject to the same controls as any other medicines.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Fresh food is the key to good nutrition: buy as wide a range of fresh fruit and vegetables as possible. Try to avoid processed foods.
