  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

Other people: Litter, especially glass, contributes to accidents and children are often the victims. A cleaner neighbourhood will be safer and more pleasant for everyone. The environment: As well as disfiguring our towns and countryside, litter can injure wildlife, block streams, kill marine life, and pollute land and water.

Birds regularly choke on plastic waste, and small mammals often get trapped inside discarded containers. RESPECTING THE COUNTRYSIDE - THE FACTS: Almost everybody likes a day in the country: 84 per cent of us do it at some time during the year. On a fine summer Sunday there will be 18 million people enjoying the countryside in one way or another. Yet rural areas are under severe pressure - from agribusiness, forestry, building, roads, power stations and cables, reservoirs and the pressures of unaware tourism.

A 2005 survey showed that 68 per cent of us are very concerned about the future of The UK's countryside. The way we relate to the countryside when we are in it can make a big difference. Although the greatest threats come from large-scale developments, visitors to the countryside are also often responsible for environmental damage.

Examples are the severe bankside erosion of the Norfolk Broads, the scarring of Lakeland fells by hordes of hikers, and fires on the heaths of Dorset which have killed important populations of birds and reptiles. The people who live in rural areas must also play their part. For instance, the estimated 70,000 kilometres (110,000 km) of The UK's rights of way (nearly 60 per cent of the total) which are currently obstructed, ploughed up or overgrown need to be properly maintained so that we can all enjoy them. The last 30 years have seen major and welcome changes to the provision of facilities for countryside recreation.
