  • For The Recycling Consortium (TRC), which is based in Bristol, in the South West of the UK, the 3R’s are the only way to deal with the waste we produce. TRC promotes ways to reduce, re-use, recycle and compost. By advancing sustainable ways to deal with our waste, TRC believe that we all benefit - as do our planet and our environment.

One manufacturer is already online advertising 'natural off-white' products, an environment-friendly alternative to the bleached wood-pulp ranges. Even 10 years ago it was hard to find a reasonable range of recycled papers, but now you can buy a very wide selection of colours and qualities.

Several local authorities and government departments now use recycled paper for most purposes; the Department of the Environment, for example, is saving around £4,000 each year by using recycled paper. Virgin Records, The Body Shop and Sainsbury's all use recycled paper where possible, as do most environmental organisations.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: The biggest contribution that customers can make is to buy recycled paper products. To help in this, all recycled paper products should be clearly labelled and widely available.

Stationery shops and office equipment suppliers ought to offer a wide range of recycled paper products, and individuals, businesses and organisations ought to use them. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Buy and use recycled paper products whenever you can. Start with tissues - kitchen roll, toilet paper and paper hankies.

If all our toilet rolls were made from recycled paper (which doesn't have to mean grey, hard and scratchy) an extra half million tonnes of paper a year could be recycled and seven million trees saved. Buy recycled stationery. Many shops now stock it, but if you have problems finding it, email Forestsaver, FoE Birmingham, Greenscene or Traidcraft (www.traidcraft.co.uk) for their recycled paper catalogues.

Write to Friends of the Earth (see: www.foe.co.uk) for a copy of their Directory of Recycled Paper which has examples of most available types. If you are responsible for buying paper for a business or organisation, contact one of the main wholesalers like Paperback, Conservation Papers or Earthwrite to find out about buying recycled paper in bulk.

You will almost certainly be pleasantly surprised by their prices. Friends of the Earth (see: www.foe.co.uk) also have lists of mills, wholesalers and shops which sell recycled paper.

USING RECYCLED PAPER-WHO BENEFITS? You: Using recycled paper products, especially unbleached and undyed ones, protects your health. In the near future they will almost certainly be cheaper too. Other people: You will be helping the co-operative companies which supply a large proportion of The UK's recycled paper, and reducing the need for dangerous new rubbish tips close to people's houses.
