Some household chemicals now come in tamper-proof containers and have bitter-tasting flavours added to deter children from drinking them. But the simple fact is that our homes contain far too many chemicals which put us, our children and our environment at risk.

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: Home health and safety should be essential elements in the education of both children and adults. Trading standards relating to health and safety need to be strictly monitored, and constantly updated in the light of new evidence. Manufacturers of household products should see safety as one of their primary concerns, and ought to be at least partially responsible for educating people about the safety aspects of their products. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Educate yourself and your children about safety in the home.

The easiest way to do this is to visit the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for advice on Home Safety. More than 14,000 people die as a result of accidents across the UK each year. There are millions of other injuries. Accidents cause loss and suffering to the victims and their loved ones, employers and UK society as a whole.

The RoSPA promote safety and the prevention of accidents at work, at leisure, on the road, in the home and through safety education. Many of the precautions you can take come down to common sense. Keeping furniture simple and uncluttered helps, as does making sure that floor-coverings won't slip or trip you up.

Have potentially dangerous electrical equipment checked and mended. Keep children's playthings simple and safe. Keep household chemicals, especially dangerous ones, to a minimum. RoSPA produces a wide range of useful material apart from their home safety website - see thier shop.

HOME SAFETY - WHO BENEFITS? You: A safer and more 'user-friendly' home will save your health and put your mind at rest. A safer house is also likely to be more comfortable and efficient. Other people: Nearly 40 per cent of all domestic accidents happen to children under 15. Making your home a safer place helps to safeguard their health and their future. The environment: Safer houses are usually more environment-friendly too.
