The lower consumption that goes with aware ownership conserves resources and energy and reduces pollution. RECYCLING USEFUL BITS AND PIECES - THE FACTS: Too often, it seems, our lives turn into an endless round of things breaking down and falling to pieces. We reorganise ourselves around temporarily useless objects and machinery, and move assorted remnants from place to place, waiting for 'someone to come and mend them', or until we can remember to find out the address of 'that place where they might be able to do something with it'. Living with so many possessions, and hanging on to them whether or not we really need them, is a recent development, and one which is common only in the affluent West.

If we don't leave things rotting in cupboards and sheds, we throw them into dustbins and skips. But in countries like China and India there is a thriving market in a wide range of second-hand parts and materials.

This trade in recycling and repair supports thousands of small craft businesses, and keeps both skills and money within the local community. In The UK 30 years ago every town and village had shops and workshops where you could take things to be mended, usually on the premises. Such businesses are now more difficult to find.

These days you will probably be told that something simply can't be mended and that you'll have to buy a new one. Yet it is still possible to find efficient and reliable businesses dealing with repair and refurbishment. For example, there are firms in London which specialise in refilling duvets, repairing cane chairs, re-tinning pots and pans, and repairing and re-glazing casserole dishes; while a Newcastle tailor's speciality is replacing worn cuffs and collars on favourite old shirts. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE: We need to rely more on things which last a long time and can be repaired easily, rather than always going for the latest and most up-to-date version.
